Joulutorttu recipe | How to bake Finnish Christmas pastries

We Finns love our Christmas pastries. During Christmas you can find them in most stores and coffee shops. One of the best things about these star-shaped pastries? They are super easy to make. So here is the joulutorttu recipe!

What are the joulutorttu’s really? These Finnish Christmas pastries are mostly dough and then with some jam. The most traditional one is to use plum jam. And when they are ready you can add some sugar on them to make them look even better!

Bake Finnish Christmas pastries “joulutorttu”

Here we go, I share with you the super easy steps it takes to bake the Christmas pastries.

What you need:

Dough, that you will find ready to use

Jam (preferably plum jam, but we also used apple-cinnamon jam)

(Sugar)

1. Let the dough melt for 15 minutes

I used this brand for the dough, you’ll find it in the frozen section in the store. Take the dough plates out of the freezer and let them defrost.

2. Cut the dough plates in half

Super easy!

3. Cut straight lines almost to the centre of the square

As the Finnish Christmas pastries are called “julstjärnor”, which is translated to Christmas Stars, they are shaped like stars. To do this, cut 4 lines into the squares, from every corner and almost to the center of the square.

4. Take every second half of the recently cut triangles and put into the middle

This way we make them look more like stars.

5. Put jam in the middle

6. Bake in the oven

I had them in 225 C in 13 minutes. Then viola, you are done!

If you prefer, you can add some sugar on top of the Christmas pastries. Otherwise you are good to go.

Hope you enjoy them as much as I do! 🙂

Happy holidays everyone!
